Navpatrika Puja, also known as Kolabou Puja, is a significant ritual in the Bengali culture during Durga Puja. This ritual involves worshipping nine plants, representing nine goddesses, tied together and typically kept alongside the idol of Goddess Durga. Navpatrika symbolizes the power of women and their capability to nurture life.
During Navpatrika Puja, banana plant, turmeric plant, wood apple plant, pomegranate plant, colacassia plant, rice plant, ashoka plant, jayanti (buckwheat) plant, and arum plant are tied together with a yellow thread. These plants are considered sacred and are believed to bring prosperity, good health, and happiness. The ritual is performed on Maha Saptami, the seventh day of Durga Puja festivities.
The Navpatrika Puja is followed by a series of rituals, including offering flowers, vermilion, incense, and sweets to the nine plants. Devotees also perform aarti, sing hymns, and seek blessings of the goddesses for protection and prosperity. The presence of Navpatrika adds a divine touch to the Durga Puja celebrations, enriching the spiritual experience for the worshippers.
