Kalpana Chawla BA is a renowned Indian-American astronaut who made history as the first woman of Indian origin to go to space. Born in Karnal, India, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College before moving to the United States to pursue further studies.

After obtaining her Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington, Kalpana Chawla went on to earn a second Master's degree and a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder. She was selected for the NASA astronaut program in 1994 and made her first spaceflight in 1997 aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia.
