Ganga Dashami, also known as Ganga Jayanti, is a Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Ganga, the river that is considered sacred in Hinduism. This festival is celebrated with great devotion and fervor by Hindus, especially in regions along the banks of the river Ganga. It falls on the Dashami Tithi (tenth day) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the Hindu calendar month of Jyeshta.
On Ganga Dashami, devotees take a ritual bath in the holy river Ganga and perform puja (worship) to seek blessings for prosperity and well-being. It is believed that taking a dip in the sacred waters of Ganga on this day can wash away sins and purify the soul. The festival is also marked by various cultural programs, bhajans (devotional songs), and processions to honor the Goddess Ganga.
During Ganga Dashami, devotees can be seen offering prayers, flowers, and diyas (oil lamps) to the river as a token of their reverence and gratitude. Images of Goddess Ganga are adorned with flowers and garlands, and devotees perform aarti (ritual of worship with lamps) to seek her blessings. The significance of Ganga Dashami lies in the belief that the sacred river Ganga has the power to cleanse both the body and soul of all impurities.
