Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, marks the beginning of the Diwali festival in India. It is celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Ashwin. On this auspicious day, people worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera for prosperity and wealth.
Dhanteras is considered an auspicious day for buying gold, silver, and utensils. It is believed that purchasing these items on Dhanteras brings good luck and prosperity to the household. Many businesses also perform a special puja on Dhanteras to ensure success and prosperity in the coming year.
The practice of lighting lamps and decorating homes with flowers and rangoli is common on Dhanteras. The belief is that these decorations welcome Goddess Lakshmi into the home and bring blessings of wealth and prosperity. The day is also associated with the story of King Hima's wife saving him from death by lighting lamps and placing gold and silver coins at the entrance of their home.
