Devshayani Ekadashi, also known as Ashadhi Ekadashi, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated with great enthusiasm. It marks the beginning of Chaturmas, a holy period of four months where Lord Vishnu is believed to go into a deep slumber. Devotees observe fasts, offer prayers, and perform various rituals to seek blessings on this auspicious day.
The word Devshayani literally translates to "the sleeping god", as it is believed that Lord Vishnu goes to sleep on this day in the cosmic ocean of milk. It is said that whoever observes a fast on this day with dedication and devotion, attains virtues equivalent to performing several Yagnas and pilgrimages. Devotees often visit temples, recite prayers, and listen to religious discourses to seek spiritual progress and guidance.
Devshayani Ekadashi falls on the 11th day (Ekadashi) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the Hindu month of Ashadha, usually in June or July according to the Gregorian calendar. The festival holds special significance for Vaishnavites, who consider it as one of the most important Ekadashi vrats to observe. Through fasting, prayers, and acts of charity, devotees seek forgiveness for their sins and strive for spiritual upliftment on this sacred day.
